Dear Zora Neale Hurston,
Everyone quotes Richard Wright when talking about Their Eyes Were Watching God: “carries no theme, no message, no thought.” I guess it provides a good laugh, but mostly it goes to show that we, as women of color, belong in two categories: women and color. Who is on whose team Zora? Who put us in such categories? I don’t belong.
Sincerely,BSA
